On blogging & finding balance

06 May 2014

Hey friends,

You may have noticed that we've been a bit quiet on the old blogging front recently. This is because we're currently in the process of re-evaluating our whole Lovers'.TIF brand. We love what we do and we want to make sure that we always do it to the best of our ability. We've noticed recently that as we've been taking on more work in addition to the day jobs, our blogging output has been suffering - it needs some serious tlc people.

I love our blog, and I don't think that it should suffer on account of anything else that we may take on. I also think that it should evolve and grow with us. With this in mind, we'll be taking another blogging break. Currently, we're not sure of a time frame but it won't be too long we can promise you that! In the meantime, you'll still be able to catch us on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest where we'll be posting regularly.

While we're real-talking, a word about what we've got planned for the future. We're working together to really figure out what we both want to get from this venture. When we set out, we were dipping our toes in the water, seeing how we worked together and whether this type of arrangement could really work for the two of us as professionals and as a couple. It was a great success! We've established that we work well together and that our skills compliment each others. What we're still working on is how we can turn this knowledge into a functioning business. We're taking the time to do this properly and to end up with something that we love and that we're proud of. I can put my hand on my heart and say that the blog hasn't always been my priority in times of stress, but I want to come back with something that I'm dying to work on all the time and that we can all get excited about.

So we hope you can forgive us, and that you'll keep in touch. If you sign up to our newsletter, I'll be sending out regular updates with our progress as well as what we're up to generally. We want you to know that this isn't an elaborate way of us saying that we're bowing out of the whole thing, we're going to come back stronger.

We'll be seeing you for the grand re-opening soon!

Relaxation & Positivity

11 April 2014

This month I've been trying really hard to see through all of the changes going on around me to get to the other end of it all. It's been difficult, but I have to say that the work I've been doing around my word for the year (challenge) has really helped. I think I'm finally seeing some light.
This board reflects some of the sentiments that I want to incorporate more of into my life. I like the positive messages and the idea of getting back to nature to have a more relaxing time of things. And also pie, I love pie.

Brand Spotlight: IKEA

09 April 2014

Things have changed around here - we're going to do things a little differently with Brand Spotlight from now on. We'll be looking into how brand communicates itself to its customers and how they do it so effectively, sound good?
So without further ado, for our first brand we'll be looking at those kings of home furnishing IKEA.

With 345 stores across the planet, IKEA was one of the first brands to embrace the digital age. Making maximum use of social media and also shifting people away from catalogues to it's digital version with ever increasing apps for both Android and iOS made people sit up and take note on how to market a worldwide business.

According to figures, the IKEA catalogue app has been downloaded over 10 million times making it current and fresh to modern shoppers. Especially when you bring augmented reality into the picture.

Social Media

Facebook: The USA page has the highest following measuring about 3,411,985. The retailer's social teams pose questions, links to photo albums, and post YouTube clips to increase engagement.

Twitter: IKEA has separate twitter feeds for all its country-specific twitter pages. The US page alone has 2, 22,000 followers while IKEA Canada page has 6, 66,000 followers. Ikea makes these pages engaging by tempting its followers to indulge in campaigns such as celebrating 'Bring your Own Friends Day (BYOF).

Pinterest: This is an obvious choice for a retailer which deals in home furnishings, as this claims to be the official 'visual discovery tool'. Making best use of Pinterest, IKEA visually presents its merchandise to local markets in the UK, USA, Canada and other countries.

Google +: IKEA's USA page entered Google + only recently (January, 2014) and has the lowest following out of all of its pages. The retailer has apparently not been able to make much use of this platform even though the main page was launched in December 2011.

Outdoor campaigns

While promotion of its catalogue through online mode constitutes almost 70 percent of its annual marketing spend, IKEA creates highly engaging outdoor campaigns.

Indoor Garden: IKEA took to the indoor environments of Waterloo and Liverpool rail stations in the London, to show to commuters that they could 'make more of their outdoor spaces' - a.k.a their gardens. A pop-up shop invited commuters to sit down and observe the wide range of outdoor solutions available in the IKEA store that could help them transform their outdoor space.

Billboard-fitted wardrobes, Vienna: IKEA advertised the advantages of its particular flexible wardrobe by "dressing" a billboard with a PAX door that passers-by could slide open in order to discover IKEA's solutions that help fit anything into a wardrobe.

IKEA has really pushed the boundaries in what a furniture retailer should be. It is more about just selling furniture, showing how it helps benefit your life is something IKEA strives towards and by using all these channels, it presents itself as current, cool and at the forefront of it's market. What IKEA will do next, I don't know but I'm excited to find out.

5 free software for your design needs

04 April 2014

Getting a hold of some decent software or applications is always a tricky one. Sometimes you have to pay through the nose to get a best bit of kit out there. But, if you trawl along around on the internet you can find something just as good. So, I saved you the time and picked out some of the best software to use that you may just need.

GIMP

If your a fan of Photoshop this open-source free graphic design software stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Today it’s available in versions for Linux, Windows, and Mac. GIMP's interface differs somewhat from Photoshop, but a version of GIMP is available that mimics Adobe's look and feel, making it easier to migrate over if you’re use to using Photoshop.

The full suite of tools is available here - everything you’re accustomed to is within easy reach, including painting tools, colour correction, cloning, selection, and enhancement. The team that oversees development has worked hard to ensure compatibility too, so you’ll be able to work with all the popular file formats without any trouble at all. You can download it here

Google Fonts

Google set up a service that lets you use a trust bit of code that let's you embedded a number of cusomt fonts directly onto your site.

Google Fonts - recently did a deal with font service Monotype to make its free fonts available for desktop use. Monotype's SkyFonts software is normally used to rent commercial fonts for short-term use. But the new deal means you can access desktop versions of hundreds of Google Fonts - previously only available for use as web fonts - via SkyFonts, for as long as you want.

Blender

No this ain't for food, Blender is a highly impressive 3D rending tool Blender is a free, open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems.

Started by Blender Foundation founder Ton Roosendaal in 2002, Blender is now largest open source tool for 3D creation. Its makers are constantly working on its development, but you can pretty much do anything 3D related with this software, including modelling, texturing, animation, rendering and compositing. This little video should give you a taste about becoming the next Pixar animator.

SVG-Edit

If you’re looking to quickly output SVG, or edit an existing SVG file, there are a few online editors that will do the job just as well as Adobe Illustrator. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an open format that allows you to reproduce your Vector drawings programmatically, and one of the nicest projects is SVG-Edit.

This is built entirely on HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript without requiring any server-side processing. So not only can you use it to create and edit documents, but as it’s open source you can also download and modify the code - making your own version if you want.

Behance

With all this free software you need somewhere to showcase it and that's were Behance comes in.

With millions of views each month, online creative community Behance is quickly becoming the place to be for artists of all disciplines. It's a fantastic way to see what your peers are up to as well as finding new work and creative inspiration from top web designers and agencies. Find the best ways to get your work noticed on Behance

So get cracking, you never know where this software could take you.

5 Minutes with...RAJE

01 April 2014

Welcome to April one and all! James' birthday month and a mere five weeks until we hop on a plane to Mexico, I can't wait!
We're kicking of the month with a re-brand of our Brand Spotlight posts, they're now going by the name of Five Minutes With...I hope you can forgive us the confusion. Now, onwards!

This month we're talking to the lovely Roanna Price of design collective RAJE. RAJE is made up of four fabulous women who are working together to create an ethical fashion brand. We'll leave it to Ro to tell you more...

So tell us about RAJE...how did it come about?//
Back when we were all young, Innocent girls we entered the Make Your Mark in Fashion competition. We went on to become finalists, show at LFW and won some funding. This was the push we needed to go ahead and try and make R~A~J~E happen.

How have you found the process of setting up your own business?//
Challenging, formative and very very time consuming. Since I was 17 R~A~J~E has been my focus. Uni, jobs and friendships have all come and gone in that time. When you run a business you realise you can only have relationships with very secure people who understand when you can't do anything for the next 8 weekends!

Ethical fashion/design is the cornerstone of RAJE - do you ever find that this conflicts with any other aspects of the business?//
I think it's better put as, as designers we don't believe a product can be beautiful if it's origins are in bloodshed, exploitation and damage. So, rather than ethics being our cornerstone, true beauty is our cornerstone - the two are inextricably linked. And yes, it causes conflicts - but it all depends on your priorities. It conflicts with straight forward, money making goals. But we didn't get into this to make money. We want to provide beautiful, well-made, sustainable clothes that boost women's confidence and provide business for healthy supply chains. So in that way, no, there is no conflict.

Have you ever felt the need to compromise in order to stay true to your wish to remain ethical?//
We know that "being ethical" is a journey and one of the first things we all agreed on was that we would always, no matter how big we are, re-evaluate our production process, our employee contracts and our social responsibility. So while we don't feel like we've compromised, we also know that this is just the starting point.

The four of you come from different backgrounds within the creative industry, do you feel as though your separate disciplines merge well together? Do you enjoy mixing your talents?//
Definitely. Our different disciplines, passions and strengths make us an incredibly strong team. What one of us isn't good at, the other will excel in. And yes, a R~A~J~E day is always a fun day - we are four incredibly opinionated, stubborn, driven and talented people. I would say that J, A and E are three of very few people in the world who can take me on when I'm fired up, and the same applies to them. Uniting all of our passion and drive to run R~A~J~E really is a remarkable thing.

And finally, what does RAJE have up it's sleeve for the future?//
Many many things! But it's safe to say a limited edition range, second collection, online magazine and swanky studio space are all in the pipe line.

Thanks to Ro for chatting to us, we loved hearing about RAJE!

What's gone viral this week

29 March 2014

I return with my weekly look at what has taken over the web. This week we have scares, questions over crowd funding and home videos that put most parents to shame.

Lights Out

Award winning film director David F. Sandberg has created a two minute horror film which has sent Twitter into a flurry, with one poster describing it as 'traumatising'. Describing the film would spoil the story but believe me it is not for younger viewers. Although being dialogue free, it is genuinely jumpy and the director uses classic horror techniques to ramp up the tension.

If you don't like horror films, I strongly advise you don't watch this as you won't be able to switch you lights off for a very long time.

Oculus Rift gets bought

One piece of tech that has had every talking has been Oculus. The VR machine might be the step into virtual reality that the world has been looking for. After raising nearly $2.5 million dollars on KickStarter many people were extremely excited to see were this could go.

But before mass production of these fancy binoculars have even happened, the CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg swept in and paid a cool $2 billion for it. I can see why he would want to acquire this leap forward in connecting the world, Google has been acquire all various types of robotic companies and the social network needs to show it's a major player in the online game.

Now many people are question why they bothered backing Oculus in the first place if it was just going to sell out to the highest bidder. Some of the comments are pretty damning about the company have gone about there business.

  • "Well, I'm kind of horrified. I'd never have backed this if I'd had an inkling this might happen. Very happy I didn't preorder the second devkit; I'm going to wait and see what competitors might pop up." — Svein Ove Aas
  •  "All I can say with absolute certainty is I absolutely do not like, use, nor trust Facebook as a company. While my funds are yours fair and square, at this moment in time, I regret backing this. I sincerely hope I am wrong." — Brad'li
  • "Wow I am in shock...VR was soo close... Now I feel we are back in 1993 again. What a setback. I had so much hope for this project. You really need to give us a proper explanation for this move..." — Mathias Hagstrom
  • "Wow, I misjudged you... sorry to hear I was backing Facebook in the end... thanks for that." — Tim Pettigrew
  • "I too want my $10 back. I don't want my VR experience in the Facebook mall." — Avram Eisner "Horrible... HORRIBLE decision. I want my donation back." — Mike Yoo
  • "I would have NEVER given a single cent of my money to Oculus if I had known you were going to sell out to Facebook. You sold all of us out. I hope this backfires horribly for Oculus and Facebook. I will personally discourage absolutely anyone I know from buying what was once an indie dream and is now a soulless corporate cash cow. God, I want a refund so badly." — John Wolf

This now leaves us with a dilemma about the future of crowd funding. Could this be that people will have to question the nature of why they should donate there money. Only time will tell on this one.

Light-saber boy

A dad has turned his young son into a lightsaber-wielding, telekinesis-mastering pyromaniac on YouTube. His secret? He works as an after effects artists for DreamWorks. Posting a series of 10-second videos featuring his son, seeing him shooting fire in the kitchen, causing mayhem with a lightsaber in a toy store, operating a grappling gun and even blasting off in a space rocket at a playpen. The LA-based animator put his impressive CGI skills to use for them, to the delight and in many cases jealousy of YouTube viewers.

On Podcasting...

25 March 2014

Alongside from doing this lovely blog, I also spend some time running a podcast with a close friend of mine. We call ourselves the CinemaGoers and we talk about all things movies (if you hadn't noticed I'm a pretty big film geek). We both have a love for talk radio so creating a podcast seemed like the perfect fit.

I was recently interviewed for 20 Something Bloggers about how we got involved in setting up a podcast and why we do it. You can read a snippet of it below...

Erini: Tell me a little about your current podcast (name, genre, how long you’ve been doing it, etc):
James Pimblett: My name is James Pimblett, I’m one half of the Cinemagoers podcast. The podcast is a bit of comedy and movies rolled into one. We have been doing it just over 4 months now and enjoying it very much.

ES: Is this your first podcast? If not, what was?
JP: This is the first podcast we have done, I have been featured on a few. I used to work in radio and alot of the work was podcasted along side with being live on the radio so I featured on a video game podcast and other various bits of talk radio.

ES: Was there a podcast that sparked your interest in doing this? What was it about that podcast that sparked something in you?
JP: There wasn’t really a podcast that sparked the interest. I listened to a few movie podcast’s like Empire magazine and Mark Kermode on Radio Five Live and we just wanted to make something more honest that wasn’t about the pompous side of the movie industry, just for the everyday cinemagoer that could relate to going to the movies.

ES: Why do you listen to podcasts?
JP: I think podcasts are a great form of translating your thoughts and ideas and with mobile technology becoming better. Podcast’s are very easily accessible when your out and about. You can just plug in your headphones and lose yourself for an hour.

ES: Do you have a current favorite podcast? What’s something you admire about it? Who do you look up to in this field?
JP: My favourite one is Mark Kermode on Radio Five Live. Even though he can come across as a bit pompous, his use of language to describe something he loves and hates is brilliant especially if he hates it, it is excellent to listen to him. That’s what I admire most about the podcast, it challenges you not to go across the same ground and bring a fresh perspective on things, which is what we try to emulate.

ES: Why do you think podcasting is important? What makes it unique?
JP: I feel podcasting is unique it is just a more specialist version of the radio. Having the ability to effectively create your own listening material through the thousands of podcasts available is great. But you have to listen to alot to find the best podcast to relate to.

This is just a small part of the interview - you can catch it in full here. If you've been thinking about podcasting I must say it's great to just talk about your passions, give it a go!

James xo

(p.s. If anyone has any podcasting related questions then please get in touch - if you'd like a post that covers the finer points of setting up your own podcast we'll be happy to oblige!)

What's gone viral this week

13 March 2014

I'm back this week with my watercooler moments from the worldwide web. I've been a bit ill this week (man flu hit, took me straight out the game. Good news is I caught up on Breaking Bad. No spoilers please) so my radar for what's making waves might be a bit off but I found some of these gems for you to enjoy.

Arnold wants to crush things

The Governator bought a tank, Yes, a tank. Now, he's inviting you to donate to the charity for a chance to go to Los Angeles and crush things in the tank with him. Schwarzenegger's latest stunt is similar to his previous charity promotion, in which he posed as a heckling gym manager. A $10 donation will buy you one entry into the contest, which could end with you riding in a tank and crushing birthday cakes with the Terminator himself.

Keep you're eye out for Arnie, viral marketing is something that he has really got a swagger for at the moment and I don't see this being his only entry in future.

First Kiss

So do you remember you're first kiss? Scary? Well, at least it wasn't broadcast on the internet. Until now.

20 strangers took part in LA filmmaker Tatia Pllieva candid look at love, romance and chemistry. In this beautifully shot video, it shows all moments of awkwardness and small talk before they go in for the finale. With over 30 million views on YouTube, we all like to see a little love on occasions.

Bird's eye view

After a particularly nasty storm, a pelican stumbled ashore at the secluded resort in Tanzania. The pelican, named Bigbird by the staff, was abandoned by his flock because he couldn't fly. Luckily for him, resort workers took him in and helped him on his way. And luckily for us, they put a GoPro camera on his beak so we could see his first flight.

I'll be back with more soon

Choosing my One Little Word

10 March 2014

So I thought I should drop in and explain why I chose the word Challenge for my One Little Word project.

As recommended I spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas. But once I got going, I was really surprised at how many came out of the process. For the record, other words that made it onto the shortlist were:

Brave
Balance
Inspire
Positive
Action
Peace
Choice

In the end, Challenge seemed to be the best fit for me as it's the one that resonates most with my life at the moment for many reasons. I wanted my word to take on several meanings. For example, I want to challenge myself to try some new things this year, I want to face up to the challenges that are coming my way, and I want to have the courage to challenge situations that aren't working for me. I think there's plenty of scope to let this word inhabit my year.

I'm trying really hard to let this word in, as I'm naturally a fairly quiet person it's a big thing for me to step out of my comfort zone. I made a conscious effort to settle on a word that implied some kind of action on my part. I mean, I could have plumped for 'Peace' but I knew I'd use it as an excuse to step backwards. This way, I'll be rising to the Challenge (see what I did there?!) of the One Little Word project.

I'm still in the process of gathering all my materials to set up my book. I'm excited to get started and to start building an album for the year. Already I've been feeling more inclined to raise my game and to do more of my own work outside of the day job - something I've not really done in a long time.

I can't wait to share the beginning of my album with you! More updates soon!

Getting started with Adobe Muse

06 March 2014

We're currently undertaking a project using Adobe's latest website builder, Muse. This great piece of software lets you focus on design over code, which is a nice advantage if your coding skills aren't up to scratch.

Working with Muse offers a great story telling arch that I haven't seen in software before and offers an interesting way to show content. So before you get started with your site, I've found a couple of resources that will help with designing it.

Video Tutorials
If you're unsure about a certain technique and want to find out how to do it yourself, then Joseph Angelo Todaro might just be able to help. His detailed Adobe Muse resource videos talk you through a number of features, including parallel scrolling, increasing your workflow and so much more. A really big help to take you through the finer details. You can find him here.

Resources
After some icons or fonts? Then speckyboy.com is for you. This online design magazine contains an endless list of resources that you can pull and integrate into your design. They say if it's free, it's too good to be true. For once this is not the case, some of the freebies on offer can boost any site you're working on.

Inspiration
So you've got your videos in place and fonts are good to go. You ask what should I build? If you get designers block (not to sure if that's the term) you can find yourself some inspiration over on Adobe Muse's site of the day feature. With websites from around the globe, if explores amazing design ideas from simple one page sites to intricately built multi-page sites, everything you need to get the cogs working.

So there's just a handful of things to get you working up something beautiful. What you waiting for?

If you're using Muse at the moment, show us what you've been working on and we'll be happy to share your designs

ONE LITTLE WORD

04 March 2014

Hello everyone! Can you believe that we're in March already?! 2014 has really gotten off to a flying start, I'm so happy that Spring is almost here.
This month I'm introducing a new feature to the blog. I recently signed up to Ali Edwards' 'One Little Word' workshop and so I thought I'd share the results here. One Little Word guides you through the year by completing a series of prompts about your chosen word for the year. For example, for 2014 I've chosen the word Challenge (I'll explain more about the decision making behind my word later).

For this whole year I'll be inviting the word Challenge into my life. Along the way I'll be following Ali's prompts to create a Project Life style album. I'm so excited to get started with this project and I'm really looking forward to sharing my album and process with you all.

However in true Svea style, I'm a little late to the party (Read: I don't have all of my supplies together yet). I'll be sharing photos of my album as it comes together as well as bits of the work I'm producing for it. Look out for my post about my word and how I came to choose it in the next few days.

Looking forward to sharing this journey with you!

James talked us all through the finer points of Vine, I especially love this Parody of the Shining featuring Oreos.

3// I took my Social Media accounts into my own hands by looking how to bring all of your separate accounts together to create a coherent experience for your readers.

4// Which sites do you use to host your portfolio online? I shared my top 3 here.

We've got a great month ahead planned for March. I'll be getting down and dirty and experimenting with new processes and projects - more news on that next week! I can't wait to share what we've got in store for you!

Have a great weekend!

What's gone viral this week

26 February 2014

We're back for another week of viral hits, bringing you a right mixture of the weird to the wonderful. Let's dive in shall we?

The Human Loop-de-loop

Superhuman free-runner Damien Walters was given the task to deliver the impossible. PepsiMax sponsored the daredevil's attempt, providing him with a human-sized loop the loop in an abandoned warehouse. After working the out the maths involved — he needed to be running at 8.6 mph at the top — Walters got to work on being the first man to defy gravity in a loop.

Did he do it? See for yourself....

Hair raising ad

In a clever bit of advertising from Sweden, comes some real time marketing that you could becoming to our shores. Apotek, a pharmacy brand, outfitted subway platform ads in Stockholm with ultra-sonic sensors that reacted when a train was coming. The ad featured a model with a lush mane, and when the train came, her hair flapped in the wind and she struggled to keep it in place. Clever, eh?

Apotek Hjärtat - Blowing in The Wind from Ourwork on Vimeo.

#SingItKitty

From the guys who brought you the pony bouncing along the Scottish coast comes a new video celebrating internet silliness. Mobile phone company Three today released Sing It Kitty, a 60 second clip featuring an eight-year-old girl and her kitten miming ‘ 80s band Starship’s ‘We Built This City’. After last year’s Dance Pony Dance, featuring a small Shetland pony showing off his moonwalking skills to Fleetwood Mac’s Everywhere, accumulated 8.3 million YouTube views. I bet by the end you've got your fist clenched and you're humming along.

Everyday concepts the internet made us aware of

21 February 2014

The internet is a wonderful thing, it's given birth to millions of ideas some of them inhabit our lives everyday, sometimes for right or wrong reasons, so it can be quite tricky to lose sight of them all. I love seeing new and interesting concepts that people have created to help make our lives easier, I think I'm slowing becoming addicted to them. So this is the ideal post for me to get you thinking (or least looking at a few of these and going, oh isn't that clever) for a Friday.

Phonebloks
I seen this and immediately wished it was a reality. The concept is that you have a base for a phone and you build it, like Lego, the phone that best suits your lifestyle. My brief description doesn't do it justice, give this little video a watch and you will wish they made these for real.

Ring Watch
You have jewellery? You have watch? Why not combine the two? These rings are wonderfully well designed and come in Tron-esque colours, yellow and blue. They look like, his and hers rings but still an interesting way of putting together your hand accessories.

Self Cleaning T-Shirt
This one started life as just a concept on kickstarter and could heading our way very soon. Looking for only $20,000 to get going, this concept gained so much momentum that it raised nearly $300,000. Dubbed the Silic, it gets its name from the billions of silica particles that layer the fabric. Even when wearing a Silic t-shirt while working up a sweat, this liquid will evaporate into the air instead of into the fabric. So if your clumsy like me and spill your tea a fair bit, keep you eye out for this. It could be the answer your looking for.

Rapid Packing Container
Last but certainly not least, we have two students Henry Wang and Chris Curro showing us how the future of packaging could look like. Designing a more efficient box that uses 15 - 20 % less cardboard and is ergonomically better to open and pack. This could just be arriving at your door one day.

That was just a couple of ideas to get the ball rolling in your mind. I haven't been blessed with coming up with one yet. But doesn't mean I never will, watch this space it might happen...or not.

What's gone viral this week

14 February 2014

1// 10 Years of Facebook
So this week we'll kick off about the most talked about thing on Facebook and that is there very 10 year look back videos. In honour of turning 10 years old (that has flown over) you can catch some of your highlights from your time on the social network. According to Facebook, the videos have been shared over 100 million times making it a pretty big win for them. You can make your own film right here

2// Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympics are in full flow, and if like me you're struggling with the snowboarding lingo and waiting for the Jamaican bob-sleigh team to show up is going to be my personal highlight. Well, just before the Olympics came to air Channel 4 nailed all the colours of the rainbow to their mast ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics; focussing on a pro-gay vibe for a new promo video.

Russia's anti-gay controversies have been outraging many corners of the rest of the world over recent weeks, particularly after the British channel aired ruthlessly enraging documentary 'Hunted' last week, showing youth gangs proudly capturing and attacking young LGBT people. Channel 4 put this video together that has been viewed over 1 million times on Youtube.

3// Farewell Flappy Bird
One of the most beloved or hated game, depending on your stance has disappeared forever from the app store.

The story of Flappy Bird is a strange one, the game sat in relative obscurity many months after its release, and then, seemingly out of nowhere, it quickly became one of the most popular iOS apps, at one point reportedly earning its creator as much as $50,000 per day. At the pinnacle of the game's success, Dong Nguyen decided to remove it from the App Store, following the pressure to be number one.

But, it's not that the fact that it's been a tremendous sensation. If you head over to ebay the prices for phones that has still got the game on there mobiles is unbelievable, ranging from £150 - £3,900. If you're missing the little hapless bird you can place your bid right here

Keeping your hand in after graduation

12 February 2014

I'm learning very quickly the importance of making and maintaining connections within the industry. After graduating in 2011 I was lucky enough to start my current job pretty much straight off, I managed a meagre four months of Job Seekers Allowance. Because of this, I made a fatal error and I let the connections I'd worked hard for in uni slide. I'm only just about recovering now. It's so important to get the feelers out there and interact with your peers, I can't stress it enough. We all need to stick together and share the love! And you never know when you'll be able to give someone a helping hand or get a boost yourself.

My problem is that I find it hard to make the first move, I'm a fairly shy person so I struggle sometimes to put myself out there. With this in mind, I've put together a few pointers based on my own experiences.

1//Pimp out your LinkedIn.
I've only just properly hopped on the LinkedIn bandwagon, previously my half finished profile was just sitting there collecting dust. Big mistake. As soon as I made an effort, threw a half decent summary on there and added my experience, the connection started pouring in. I know it sounds obvious, but maybe just maybe the website built for making connections might actually help make connections. And I've learnt in the past few weeks that it's sup rising who the people you know, know. So to instantly get yourself out there, sort out your LinkedIn. Trust me.

2//Keep your hand in, full-time job or not.
I'm not talking about Moonlighting at every hour of the day, but at least make an effort to keep involved with the scene. Go to exhibitions, go to lectures, go to events. Just go. You'll see the regular faces and they'll see you. Even if the only benefit you get from it is that you expand your mind, isn't that enough? Best case scenario is that you get chatting to someone who might just be looking for what you can give.

3//Take a day off and go to a workshop.
I'm guilty of this one. All to often, there are events on that I would love to go to. The hitch? They're usually during the day when I'm at work, or in the evening when my only thought it "urgh, I have to get up early the next day". My advice? Just go already. Take a day off and go. A few hours less sleep won't do any harm for all the benefit you'll gain. This is one of my resolutions for this year. Join me, let's learn together!
Another one in this bracket is to attend a freelance event. Jelly Liverpool is an awesome event that is held once a month where Freelancers can come set their gear up and work all day around other creatives. It's a great chance to mix with people from other disciplines and to potentially make some new connections. What have you got to lose? Also, if you're in the North West, I'd definitely recommend getting to a Kin event. Great events, great networking!

So now I guess I need to follow my own advice! I'm really trying to be more involved in Liverpool's amazing creative community this year, I hope we can take this journey together.

Brand Spotlight: Little Atom Productions

10 February 2014

Happy Monday everyone! And welcome to February's Brand Spotlight! We thought we'd set you up for a great week by sharing our interview with the lovely Karen and Gemma of Little Atom Productions. Little Atom are based in our very own Liverpool and are in the business of creating wonderful and exciting events for their clients. We love these two inspiring ladies so we couldn't wait to find out more about the great brand they're creating...

Hi Ladies! Tell us a bit about Little Atom...//
Little Atom Productions is a creative event management company that will be 3 years old this Spring. We deliver memorable events for clients across the creative, charity and corporate sectors across the UK and we also produce our own commercial live music and spoken word events, including the Liverpool In Conversation series.

What inspired you to go it alone?//
We’d been working together since 2009, initially putting on a number of cabaret events in our spare time, it was really just a way to create the kind of nights out we and our friends wanted to attend.  In 2010 we realised that our combined skills (Gemma’s background in theatre design and hospitality and Karen’s in film festivals, cultural event production and programming) would be ideal for forming our own creative event management company.

We held a launch event in September 2011 to let the city know we were in business, but we were also both in full time jobs, working all night and at weekends and using our holiday time to deliver events! In May 2012 we were working on events that were too big to manage in our spare time so we decided to take the plunge and manage the business full time.

Sounds great! How have you found the journey of launching your own business?//
We’ve faced all the challenges and ups and downs that any new business faces, but we’ve had so much fun. As soon as we went full time we wondered how we ever did it over evenings and weekends but we found it the best way to build our business, laying some foundations before we gave up our jobs. We were both very lucky in that our former employers both knew about Little Atom and were extremely supportive, they even came to our launch event.

We have very high standards where event production is involved and have been commended for the ‘personal touch’ that our customers and clients experience when they work with us or attend our events. Coming from backgrounds where customer service and audience experience is paramount, it was important to us that this translated over to Little Atom. If you look at our website, you’ll see that our brand identity features us, because we put everything we've got into our events and want everyone to enjoy the experience as much as we do.

Tell us more about the In Conversation Series, how did it come about?//
In 2009 we interviewed our friend, author and music journalist Paul Du Noyer (former editor of Q and founding editor of Mojo magazine) about his life and career. We were huge fans of his book ‘Liverpool Wondrous Place’ which features a list of his 100 favouriteLiverpool songs. As we knew and were working with a number of local musicians at the time, we asked if he would choose 5 songs from the list to be performed on the night. The event took place in the Hope Street hotel to an audience of 70 friends, local musicians and people who had seen the small amount of marketing we had done!

Not long afterwards we were approached by Liverpool Cathedral who had heard about the event and asked if we’d put on a couple of similar events there. It was a huge jump, size, tech and audience-wise, but who wouldn’t want to produce an event in such a magnificent building? In Conversation with Janice Long and In Conversation with Mike McCartneytook place in early 2010, and keeping the same format that featured their five favourite songs, we knew we were onto something special. Later that year we moved to the Concert Room at St. George’s Hall, which is now the home of the series.

We’ve since interviewed Ian St John, David Morrissey, Peter Serafinowicz, Paul McGann, Stephen Graham and Lynda La Plante, and have upcoming events with Jamie Carragher and Lord Michael Heseltine later this year.  These are all people who are from or have a special relationship with the city, and our musicians are all local or have a Liverpoolconnection. We are passionate about the city and its talent and we work with a fantastic local crew and give work experience to students, both backstage and on our filming team.

We’ve been in talks about developing the series in Manchester and New York and have also had discussions about commissioning so it’s exciting times! One of our long term goals is to make the series available digitally for download and streaming so we have a lot of work to do.

What are the main differences between creating an event where you are essentially the client and bringing together an event for someone else? Do you enjoy the challenge?//
In a way, it’s harder when we are the client because it’s easy to get completely carried away and excited by the endless possibilities our commercial events have! We like to give ourselves at least a 3-month lead time to produce an actual In Conversation event, but issues regarding the development of the series as a whole are constantly ongoing and require a lot of attention.  The growth and popularity of the series came about so quickly and organically that we have to be strict with ourselves about how much time we spend working on the series vs time producing client events.  Although we know how much time and money we can spend on the series, when a new piece of equipment comes out that would make our AV more spectacular or an amazing guest is suddenly interested, we sometimes need to restrategise in order to make it happen.

Working with a client is much more structured, with set timelines and budgets.  We love going into our first client meetings and working with them to get right to the heart of what it is that they need. We’re both from very visual and creative backgrounds so we treat the client journey as a story and we script the event to the finest detail. It can sometimes be a challenge because we’ll come up with concepts that the client has never even considered, but it’s a challenge we love!  We believe very strongly in only ever doing what’s right for the client and what makes sense as part of their ‘story’ (using stilt walkers and fire-breathers just for the sake of spectacle has never been our style!) so we’ve been delighted that our events have always been well received and we’ve had some great testimonials.

And finally, how do potential clients get in touch?//
Email info@littleatomproductions.com or give us a call (numbers on our website).

Thanks so much to Karen & Gemma for taking the time to talk to us, much appreciated ladies! We can't wait to see what Little Atom have got up their sleeves!

5 things I found out about Vine

06 February 2014

Just over a year ago, twitter thought it would be great to create a video making app that would give people the opportunity to communicate in new ways. Who knew you would only get 6 seconds to do it? When twitter introduced Vine to the world they didn't know how far it would get, but here is 365 days later. I know I'm meant to be the social media guy, but even I'm still getting to grips with it. So I thought I would share some of the things I've found out.

1// How it works
It's quite simple, Vine records for as long as your finger is on the create button. You can either create video in a single shot or tap the screen to create a stop animation style video. Recently Vine has also introduced two new features to the app, Sessions and Time Travel. Sessions allows users to save drafts of their unfinished posts and come back to finish them at a later time. The Time Travel feature expands the possibilities for stop-motion videos, allowing users to remove, reorganise or replace shots within a post before posting it.

2// Love your video
Video really does seem to be taking over the world, hence why instagram introducing video content was a reaction to Vine. However, integrating it with Twitter has certainly helped it grow. Certain brands have used this social media platform to their advantage and have produced brilliant content. Oreo are a fantastic example with their homage to 'The Shining' over Halloween.

3// Keep people hooked
A couple of people have created a small mini series if you like. I found that 6 seconds feels like a long time when recording, so if you create a narrative it's great way to gain more followers in the long run.

4// Get people involved
Scouting around I noticed a few brands want people to get involved more. Vine seems like a great way to encourage your audience to tag you in clips of them testing your products/services. It seems everyone loves a freebie! Asos showed this one off with a customer unboxing their stuff

5// Be Creative
Being creative it seems is definitely the most important aspect when creating your Vine video. Coming up with a great idea is actually more difficult that making the video itself. I found writing a few ideas down on a piece of paper helped as I didn't just want to rush in with a post.

So I have the Vine app downloaded now and I'm going to get my video on! Hopefully I'll have something worth showing. Wish me luck.

My Favourite Portfolio Websites

04 February 2014

This month I'm going to be sharing a few of my tips and tricks for getting yourself in a good position as a Creative to get out there and look for/get work in the private sector. So today I thought I'd start at the top and look at a few of my favourite portfolio websites.

First up, lets look at Behance. This is great because it can be a simple or as complicated as you like. You can attach your own URL to it, code it to death and pimp it up, or you can take one of their basic templates and just add your work to the gaps. Sound easy? It is. If you're just starting out and want to get your work out there fast but still have it look professional, then Behance is for you.

Next on the line is Carbon Made. Now I love this one. It's got a bit of personality, a bit of oomph and It's come from relatively humble beginnings. A two man operation that sort of exploded. It's still easy to make your portfolio look good but this one is more minimalistic than Behance. It's very simple and uniform but it does make the work stand out. I love this one particularly because for me it seems that this whole site was built just to make it as easy as possible for creatives to get their work out there. You are limited to five projects on a basic free account, but you can upgrade to add more.

And lastly, we're looking at Cargo Collective. A lot of the guys on my course chose to get themselves one of these. You do have to apply to get an account on there, but once you're in the options are pretty endless. It's pretty sweet actually. Cargo Collective is slightly different to the other two as it offers it's users a completely free standing website. So basically, you're getting your hosting all bundled up in the deal. From there you can add to pre-existing templates or you can get creative with coding. I'd recommend getting on there and taking a look at some of the example sites, there's some beautiful stuff on there.

Colour Splash!

02 February 2014

Welcome to February! I can't believe how quickly the first month of this year has gone, feels like we've only just had Christmas! I've not been so well this week so February's palette is an effort to inject some spirit and colour into my life that will hopefully banish the run down feeling.

This month I've been inspired by some lovely prints I've found online - check out our Pinterest for my full mood board. I've kept most of the colours pretty muted but wanted to make sure there was one good pop in there. I've also been inspired by this article about Chakras. I don't want to go all spiritual on here, but you should definitely read it.

Have a great February!

What's gone viral this week

30 January 2014

This week I return with my look at what was gone viral all this week. So, without further ado let's kick things off.

Vin Diesel flexes his dancing muscles

The Fast and Furious star thought it would be good idea to showcase his dancing moves to Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and Beyoncé's "Drunk in Love". Treating his 63 million facebook fans to 7 minutes of head banging and bad shuffling, in a video that went viral in pretty much seconds racking up over 800,000 likes in short space of time. Some would say it's his finest work to date, see for yourself.

Hear what you want

With one of the biggest advertising spaces in the history of sport happening this Sunday at half time on Super Bowl XLVIII. You'll be hard pressed to avoid it, even if you don't like American Football.

There has been plenty of short teasers that are doing the rounds from Bud Light to the now banned SodaStream ad and you'll also see a massive investment in social media from some of the largest companies of the world, looking to get a worldwide trend going. But, it was this ad for Beats that caught my attention.

Richard Sherman, who play's cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks and is one of the games controversial figures at the moment. He takes some pretty tough questions from journalists to help promote Beats' noise cancelling function on their headphones. A bold and uncompromising ad, with over 2 million views, it speaks volumes about how the Beats brand market there voice.

Loki is Thor

And finally, me and Svea love films and especially anything with Tom Hiddleston in. So what would the world look like if Tom, didn't play Loki but played Thor? Well, with the release of Thor 2 coming up on DVD you can see for yourself. And if you know anything about Tom Hiddleston on the web, he always is in gif form. Enjoy.

Tips for Creating a Coherent Social Experience.

28 January 2014

James is the expert when it comes to businesses creating a coherent and engaging social media experience for their followers and clients, but for me it's still important to take that knowledge and adapt it for the single blogger. Today I'm sharing my tips for creating a decent and cohesive social presence when you're not representing a major business.

1// Personality is the key.
Regardless of which site(s) you choose to use, your personality should always be the overriding element. This is different from when a business is using social media as they will generally have a  generic brand tone of voice to convey. For the everyday user, it's more important to appear human. Readers always want to know that they're engaging with a real person as apposed to just another 'brand', work to make sure what you present online is a good representation of your personality and carry that same voice across all social platforms.

2// Pick some rules, and stick to them.
Ok when I mean rules, I don't mean restricting yourself and losing any type of individuality. What I mean is, tailor the sides of your personality you want to present online and create some rules around that. For instance,  a lot of bloggers choose not to swear on their blogs at all in order to make them as universally appealing as possible. Others choose to strictly not talk about their families, personal lives or their work. It helps to create an edited 'online' version of yourself. I'm not talking about a total character re-invention here, I mean creating an essence of yourself that you present online.

3// Roll out your rules consistently.
Once you've figured out how you want to represent yourself online, you should roll this out consistently across all of the social platforms that you choose to use. I know I'm making this sound kind of heartless, but I don't mean it like that. Your readers shouldn't feel like they're talking to a totally different person every time they decide to look you up. I find it so strange when I find a blog that I love, only to take a look at their Twitter/Facebook and it's like meeting someone new. It freaks me out and makes me think that the blog is totally contrived. It can absolutely work against you to have an overly curated and pulled together blog with a mis-matched social experience to go with it. Readers will sniff out the fakeness very quickly and will be less likely to trust what you're saying in future. By all means, talk about what you're passionate about, but make sure it's consistent across the board.

4// Have fun, and don't take it too seriously.
Above all, remember that you're not a business bound by a brand identity, you're allowed to get out their and explore your personality online. It's important that the real you comes out and feels approachable to your readers. So stick to your rules but have fun within them. This way, you're comfortable with the amount of information being shared online but your readers are getting to know the real you too.

5// P.S. All of this applies to imagery too.
If you're big on photography, I'd consider getting some type of house style involved. Not sure what I mean? Take a look at Pink Ronnie's photography over on her blog. She is very consistent with her photographic style, it has developed over time, but it has a very strong identity to it. This is definitely something to consider if photography is really important to you and how to represent yourself.

Thanks for reading guys, hope these tips help!

Photo of the Week

25 January 2014

This week's photo is all about Thinking Places.

When you need to get away from it all and just have a bit of time to think about things, well this is my place. If you're ever in Liverpool then take a trip to Crosby Beach were Antony Gormley's 'Another Place' lives. The beach is taken over by 100 iron figures placed across the stretch of coastline and is haunting but also very beautiful.
